Cocaine Vaccine Ready for Human Trial

Cocaine vaccine ready for human trial – Full story: bit.ly Recently, researchers developed a vaccine that creates a lasting anti-cocaine immunity in mice. The study was published Jan. 4 in the online edition of Molecular Therapy and researchers say the strategy may be the first to offer cocaine addicts a method to fight the life-crippling illness. Some believe this breakthrough could open the door to treating other addictions as well, including nicotine, heroin and opium. “Our very dramatic data shows we can protect mice against the effects of cocaine, and we think this approach could be very promising in fighting the addiction in humans as well,” says Dr. Ronald G. Crystal, chairman and professor of genetic medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.[1] The vaccine works by binding to cocaine molecules and inevitably stopping them from reaching the brain. In effect, the mice do not feel the symptoms of the cocaine. Dr. Crystal believes the vaccine is ready for human trial.
