Cocaine Use: Symptoms of Cocaine Use

The key to determining if someone you love or know has a cocaine problem is to be aware of the symptoms of cocaine use. Usually the key to someone who is addicted (or “dependent” if you prefer to be politically correct) getting the help they need to recover, is by someone encouraging them to seek help. When they realize that their habit has become obvious, many times it will inspire then to change.

The short term obvious symptoms which you will possibly see are, expanded pupils, red and or runny nose, loss of appetite, loss of weight, hyper-activeness, unable to concentrate, sweating profusely, dehydration and diarrhea.

Longer term symptoms which come with addiction leads the person to become oblivious of job needs, family and loved ones in the quest for the next high. Long term symptoms also include heart attacks and strokes, leading from the constricted blood vessels and the high blood pressure working against each other at the same time.

Many cocaine users take cocaine to become alert or to stay alert by taking small doses. This leads to them being energetic, talkative, euphoric and showing signs of sleeplessness. These symptoms really show up if this person is not usually this way. Large amounts of cocaine can lead to erratic, bizarre and violent behavior. Another sign of usage of large amounts of cocaine could be tremors, vertigo, paranoia and muscle twitches.

Cocaine is a drug which has a short term high, it can often be done on a work break or lunch hour. If you see someone who is twitching and looking at their skin while blinking their eyes and looking around like “what is going on” then they have probably just felt the initial high. The blood pressure spikes and their pulse rate increases while the blood vessels constrict and they feel like their skin is crawling. Usually they will be trying to rub their hair down because, to them, it feels like their hair is standing on end.

Frequent use of cocaine can and will lead to a change of personality. The user will become insensitive, will see many serious things as superficial, and often become aggressive to supervision or someone trying to help them.

The long term effects of cocaine use usually lead to lack of self esteem, lack of personal hygiene and lack of interest in family and friends. Not to account for the physical long term side effects like, blood clots in the heart, intestines and the brain. The constriction of blood vessels through the brain will cause destruction of some brain cells. Usually this causes a loss of concentration and memory capacity.

It is important to your loved one that you know the symptoms of cocaine abuse, it might be you which catches the signs early and gets them help before they ruin their life and loose those they love.
