I Am Afraid of Alcohol Withdrawal & Need Advice…?
Question by Candice: I am afraid of alcohol withdrawal & need advice…?
I have always drank. I’m 22 & have been using alcohol since I was about 16. Here over the last 2 years it has gotten worse and worse though. I can usually go a few days without anything to drink…but never more than a few days. I never really wanted to stop up until this point. I have made so many mistakes and it has ruined my life in so many ways. So I really want to stop now before it is too late for me. I usually drink a half a bottle of wine. (merlot or moscato) or like 5/6 drinks of vodka. (half a bottle of the small bottle of Skyy vodka) 3/4 days out of the week. Do you think that I need to seek treatment for the withdrawals? Or can I do it on my own? I’m afraid of what’s going to happen to me because I’ve never gone more than just a few days. It’s already been 2 days & I feel fine. I’ve been exercising & maintaining my healthy diet. Any other suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don’t think your experience withdrawal when it comes to alcohol. I’m so glad you are choosing to stop early on (didn’t wait til you drank every day). Withdrawals that are physically painful and make you ill are more associated with drugs that are physically addictive. Heroin, cocaine, etc are just a few to name. Even with weed people can stop cold turkey and be fine. Tobacco has nicotine, which is the addictive drug in the cigarette. Alcohol is just that, alcohol. I believe alcoholism is more of a mental addiction than a physical one. Working out, and finding new hobbies will help. I’ve been drawing myself away from drinking. I started to drink everytime I had a bad shift at work, and I realized this wasn’t good. I mostly socially drink though. But I’m trying to get into shape, and alcohol is a no no. Don’t put yourself into situations that lead to drinking, discuss with your friends and family what you are doing. Good luck!
